Saints Row (Platinum Hits) Review

Saints RowSaint's Row is a game that is a blantant rip-off of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, from everything right down to the way you steal cars out from people driving them on the street. But make no mistake: This isn't some rushed piece of garbage simply set out to make money off the GTA franchise. It has a little bit of TLC put into it by the game developers, as well.

Similarities to GTA:
-You can do storyline and free roaming missions
-steal and customize cars
-participate in Turf Wars taking over neighborhoods for your gang
-customize your main character
-wield a large variety of guns
-listen to a large variety of music
-and generally play the game however way you want.

Enhancements over GTA:
-Much superior graphics
-better map
-a GPS system for your maps and vehicles
-customizable cell phone, with allies you can call for backup
-customizable music playlists (in case you get sick of the randomness of the radio stations and want to hear your music anywhere, anytime)
-the hands-down BEST car customization in any non-racing video game, ever!
-health items (food) you can access anytime
-self-regenerating health that heals up from about-to-die to full health in about one minute or so
-superior firearms (albeit none of them look very unique)
-a slightly better menu interface to access your firearms (I just wish they hadn't put the food and weapons in the same system; it gets confusing)
-the police are the most minor threat in the game
-public transportation is available to you (although you more than likely will never use it)
-if you find yourself stuck in water, you can skip having to swim to shore with the "warp" feature, which will do that for you. Pretty cool feature! Why aren't things like that in other games?
-shooting style & difficulity are fair (The shot target is in the fixed-center of the screen and you move the camera to aim, but it's a little harder to use then in GTA)
-both men, AND women, can be recruited as allies in your gang, or killed in other gangs. Hurray for murder equality!
-celebrity voice acting (I instantly recognized Mila Kunis as Tanya and Michael Rapaport as Troy)

Worse from GTA:
-No bikes or motorcycles to ride which is diaspointing
-no boats or planes either (not that they're really needed here)
-character can barely swim
-only one safehouse in the entire city/game
-clothes choices are lame and uninspired
-despite the good voice acting, the dialogue is terrible and it sounds like it was written by the whitest people on the planet (shades of "187: Ride or Die")
-an excessive overuse of cursing (if you're going to use it in every other word, it's impact and gravitas is completely lost)
-the A.I. is stupid, and the enemy gangs have that "random spawning" effect whenever you have a "wanted level" by them
-it's mandatory to do the side missions as you have to earn "respect" in order to do the main storyline missions, and respect is only gained from the side missions
-many of the side missions are hard or just plain annoying, like the later level Escort missions
-your character, although he has great stamina, has terrible running animation, and trying to shoot while running just looks retarded.
-the prices of things are way too high/too much (if you're just staring off and haven't saved up any cash, a fifty dollar hamburger may be a bit much). I'd prefer them if they kept them at "real-world" prices.
-the "humor" of the game is just weak and lacks any level of subtlety whatsoever, like the Wendy's burger chain parody, "Freckle B*tch's" for example
-the radio stations are horribly put together, and their names are awful, too.
-the music is generic and lame, and there's only a few "name brand" artists contributing to the game's soundtrack. Mainly, the Clipse and Twista.
-there's no difficulity setting and the main missions in the game are a bit too easy (while the side missions are often too hard)
-the "escape the police" method in this game is weak and lame. It's a drive-thru confessional booth, not that you'll ever really need to use it. I never even been in "Forgive and Forget" before.
-your recruited allies are complete idiots and you'll spend more time than anything reviving them because they rushed headlong into a dozen or so shooting enemies. They're more of a hassle to use than any kind of help, sort of like bringing young children along for grocery shopping.

-it's pretty easy to die in situations that don't call for it. Your health bar, despite it's regeneration, can't take much damage and a few shots from two or more enemies can take you from full health to death pretty quickly. Like, in three seconds quickly. This is darn frustrating and happens A LOT in the stupid Pushback missions that pop up randomally that you can't avoid skipping over.
-there's NO Body Armor, anywhere in this game, which only adds on to the annoying "easy to die" problem I mentioned above.

-the randomally popping up, mandatory "defend your turf against invading gangs" Pushback Missions. They were just as random and annoying in San Andreas and they're even more annoying here. What's worse is, in order to successfully defend your turf, you'll have to seek out special "lieutenants" instead of just killing everybody in sight. And these 12 or so lieutenants tend to hide out in weird, hard-to-reach places, and you'll have to make your way through dozens of enemies, risking your life, just to make your way to them. It was easier in GTA when you just had to kill everybody invading your land. Here, you'll literally be in an urban battlefield going against dozens of enemies, making your way to one of the four spots in the area your enemy lieutenats are at. (they only hang out three at a time and are scattered wide across the entire neighborhood warzone.) The worse thing about these missions are that they're more or less mandatory, and you won't have time to save whenever they pop up, and they'll pop up often after JUST completing a really hard mission or side quest. At least in San Andreas, it was fun to do these missions, partly because they were do in intervals and all you had to do is be the last man standing. Here, they're just a REALLY annoying chore.

-each gun has it's own set of bullets, making it hard to get ammo. In other games like GTA, bullets are shared between guns of similar types (universal pistol ammo, universal shotgun ammo, etc.), but here, each gun is different with it's own unique bullets in them, and you can only have one gun type (pistol, shotgun, etc.) at a time. BUT, because you can't use ammo from other guns, that you'll often find off of dead bodies, you'll constantly be having to decide whether to swap your gun that's low on ammo out for the one of a gang member you just shot. If so, you'll quickly run of of ammo for that, too. If not, you'll just have an empty gun on you. And thus, you'll be deciding which gun you have that is more fuel efficent, quite often in heavily heated turf wars or in missions with tons of enemies to kill. What's worse is every single gangster carries different random guns on them. If the Vice Kings just all had Vice pistols and the Carnales had a different pistol type they all shared, it'd be a lot simplier. But, no, every time you kill someone, it's "do I run out of ammo, or pick this up instead, even though it only has five more bullets in it than the one I already have?" Basically, you'll easily use up all the ammo for whichever gun you have and will have to replace it for another gun (which only has a few bullets in it) and back and fourth like so. (In other words: YOU'RE *ALWAYS* RUNNING OUT OF AMMO!)Overall, Saint's Row is a worthy edition to the GTA genre of video games. Although it's a rip-off, in every sense of the word, it's defintely not of inferior quality. In fact, Saint's Row is even better than most of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The game, at it's core is nice, but what really bogs it down are the minor negatives, which as you can see, really begin to add up. The game is much better than Three Stars, but all these little things keep it from being Five Star worthy. Other than the numerous minor flaws, the only problem is the story, which is pretty lame and generic, and the script, which is just laughably cheesy in it's attempt to sound "urban" or "gangsta" or "hip hop" or whatever. San Andreas' dialogue and script felt 100% genuine. Saint's Rows, however, sounds forced, like they were too lazy to do their research and just decided to "wing it."

It would be easy to just make a Grand Theft Auto clone that's pretty bad (True Crime has proved that, for us). It would also be pretty easy to try to make your own game, using many of the famous GTA elements involved (I.E, CrackDown). But Saint's Row, however, is a true Grand Theft Auto imitation, that manages not to photocopy the game, but use it as a worthy starting off point for their own series. I like mostly everything in this game, and the only real things keeping it from being superior to every GTA game ever made on the older consoles, is it's cheesy dialogue, numerous small annoyances, it's and cheesy writing, and lame attempts to be "funny."

Other than that, Saint's Row is a worthy duplication of the "sandbox shooting and driving" genre created by GTA itself, and it definitely deserves to be played, even if only as a week-long rental, by ANY Grand Theft Auto fan.

Walt Disney Pictures Presents Hannah Montana The MovieThis game is a lot of fun. It follows the story of the movie (for the most part) and is hours of fun. The songs are there, the humor is there, and the fashion is there. This is probably the best game based on a Disney movie or show out there.

Arena Football Review

Arena FootballI have Blitz The League, Madden 06, and now Arena Football.I have enjoyed, and like all three for their distinctly different game play and style.

Arena Football gives you the realization of how small the field actually is.QB dropping deep or rolling to buy time works against you, or it has for me in the four games I played.Pass plays must be thrown on time and reads quick.Lack of extra deep safety, unless you give up underneath coverage, makes a much more wide open game.

Plenty of plays (true to Arena style) to choose from.Play is fast and camera changes zoom and angle which makes it tougher to play defense. Also almost every play I chose had some level of success to it, unlike Madden where you junk a ton of plays because they never work.

True to life Arena rules makes it tough (only blitzing 1 LB and between the tackles) to get to the QB.Gives the opponent (whether computer or human) a chance for success. Also prevents the mass blitz you use in Madden.Tough, as in the real game, to make defensive stops. This will make it a good multiplayer game.Have gone into the 4th trailing.

The menu, similar to other EA football games, is streamlined and simple. You don't have alot of the "fluff" (newspaper articles, grumbling players, etc.) that you have and usually ignore in the other games.Makes you remember and smile about the simpler times in our football games.

Game flows well.Running clock, 1 minute rules, etc. make it go by faster. The faster game play (overall speed) is enjoyable too.

It has a true Arena feel to it.Player intro's are true to form for arena. In four games I have already seen it all.Kick return for TD, kick muffed off the nets, onside kicks, pass caught off the nets, int, int then fumble, pass caught off the wall, pass tipped by 1 defender and caught by the other WR I wasn't throwing to who stayed on his route, safety, mulitple point swings, and of course big hits into the wall and flipping over the wall. Also teams with traditional good runners Georgia and Chicago had solid run plays against me where they normally attempt them too.

I have gone to several AFL games and when explaining it I tell people that it is totally different than regular football (but it has the football pieces to it). When you understand that and get the rules it is a fun game to watch and see the strategies used. The same holds true for the video game. It's not Blitz, not Madden, but has it's own distinct feel to it.

Chaos Wars Review

Chaos WarsSure we all know that this has the worst voice acting in a video game but luckily the gameplay itself is rather quite enjoyable. It's fun how the story is almost similar to Cross Edge which is on PS3 but if you don't like the battle system in Cross Edge where you have the square panels to place your characters on and rather have it be more like the same battle style as like Disgaea or Phantom Brave then this is the game for you. This game is a retail exclusive to Gamestop but online sellers still sell it anyways and Gamestop has it for $10 now but I say once you overlook the voice acting or even just put your tv on mute, Chaos Wars is worth owning to JRPG fans. If you want better voice acting, better crossover characters to find in the game then maybe Cross Edge will be a better choice.

Totally Spies: Totally Party Review

Totally Spies: Totally PartySo.... It's just you and 3 cool spy girls. Now that's a par-tay !

That's right, the trio of teen spies are back in action in a brand new video game. This game is in the style of a classic board game where up to three players (as strange at it may be) can go up against familiar foes and earn points for customizable outfits for either Sam, Clover, or Alex. On each board, you'll earn gadgets to use to your advantage and place spy traps on spaces if you successfully complete one of 35 mini games.

Be aware, though that some of the mini games either played in the main game or in mini-game mode intend to be a little similar. For instance, the games "Free or Frozen" and "Spinning and Spiny" have one thing in common: precise jumping whether it's a freeze ray or a monster plant vine. Two other games, "Space Danger" and "Special Offer on Shoes" share this common bond: perfect balance ranging from space capsules to your mall purchases. Sometimes there are three games that seem to look alike such as "Running Fan", ""Run or... Run", and "The Infernal Vacuum Cleaner" which have this similarity: running like heck from a horde of girl-crazy fan boys, a horde of angry guards, and vacuum cleaner that really sucks.

Another interesting feature is "The Parade" where you take the customizable outfits and show 'em off in a fashion show that has you judged on points. Nevertheless, this is a pretty cool game to try out if you liked the TV series. And for one, it doesn't really matter if you're a boy or a girl playing the game.

Darksiders Review

DarksidersI'll preface this by cribbing lightly from early professional reviews.Yes, the game borrows concepts from GoW.Yes, there are aspects reminiscent of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.Toss in Devil May Cry and Portal while you're at it too.

Does the game suffer from this?Absolutely not.

I believe Darksiders will prove out to stand on its own merits:

Art/color/effects.The Darksiders world is painted vividly.Bloody, scarlet reds.Vivid, electric blues.Hellfire crackles and belches with palpable heat.Death effects are varying and plentiful. The Chaoseater rips through opponents with satisfying degrees of violence and gore.Joe Mad's character designs are top-notch, fresh, and lend strongly to the 'playing a comic book' feel. You'll like it or you won't - but I love it.The angel and demon designs, the shattered, demonically-warped landscape, the weaponry, War's armor - it's just awesome.

Voice acting.Mark Hamill is worth the price of admission. The other voice talents do an able job, but his role really stands out, and he does an impeccable job.

Combat.Button-mashers will find a lot to like.Newcomers will quickly feel at home with the combat setup.Experts won't feel like they're jogging around a dumbed-down rail-fighter.Combos are expressive and fun to achieve, and their resulting effects are satisfyingly brutal.

Story.I won't detail the twists and turns the story takes, but the fact that you're War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, sent back to Earth to figure out who screwed you over, and why, and kill everything standing in the way of that - it doesn't need to be any more cerebral.Revenge and justice are always a solid theme to an action slasher, and the story here doesn't fail.

The soul-currency system is a nice touch. There are many, many items in the destructive environment that will kick out souls that can be traded in as currency for new combat moves, weapon enhancements, health/rage buffs, etc. Some of these items raise an eyebrow (souls confined in a parking meter?ok.), but the gathering process is still fun.

Early boss fights are decent, but these battles really shine with selected increased difficulty.

The puzzles aren't terribly difficult. You're not going to employ any Half-Life 2-type problem-solving to figure them out, but they factor into the overall gameplay logically and seamlessly.

Some players might get hung up in the comparisons to other games in the genre.Others might see similarities or common themes as strengths - building on what gamers like, discarding other elements. My advice - enjoy Darksiders based on what you see, what you hear, and what you beat the holy (and unholy) crap out of in-game.Anticipate at least 17-20 solid hours of gameplay, with plenty to discover on subsequent playthroughs.

Start to finish, this game was a 9/10, and earned a spot on the shelf next to Halo 1-3, Fallout 3, CoD4, and Bioshock.

Product Description:
Darksiders is a third-person, single player action/adventure game inspired by the characters, themes and mythology of the apocalypse and the battle of Armageddon described by the Book of Revelation. But this modern interpretation is not your run of the mill Sunday school stroll through the New Testament. In the game players take on the role of "War," one of the dread Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But things are not as they were.

Devastating weapons arsenal.
Viewlarger.
Upgradable abilities.
Viewlarger.
Enemies from heaven & hell.

Fight & explore atop your mount.
Viewlarger. Once the unstoppable and just wielder of divine retribution, War is now reduced in stature and cast out amongst the ruined lands of the Earth that he himself devastated. All that remains is the search for the truth behind his betrayal and the survival of its consequences.

The Story
Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War - the first Horseman of the Apocalypse - stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between heaven and hell. Dishonored and stripped of his powers, War must return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible. But there is no clear definition of good and evil in this tale. Hunted by a vengeful group of angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vindication. But the answers he seeks will reveal a deep conspiracy in which War will find, and have to resign himself to the reality that although once the hand of God, he is just a pawn in the eternal battle between heaven and hell.

Gameplay
A mix of exploration and fast-paced action gameplay, Darksidersis based on nonlinear play situations. That means that as War slowly regainshis previous powers of destruction and carnage in order to continue hissearch for the origins and reasons for his betrayal, players will be ableto backtrack to areas and scenarios that they may have left unexploredupon first discovery. Almost all areas of the game can be explored andsome of the things players will find as they do so are treasure chests, health chests, and bonus life points, etc. The ability to go back andexplore areas is important, especially as the game progresses and Warfinds himself up against enemies whose defeat require special skills and/orweaponry.

As for combat gameplay, Darksiders features a variety of weapons--including blades and firearms--that can be used in combo moves or in single strikes. Some of these can be charged up for quick, but devastating attacks on enemies and all can be arranged on your controller's D-pad for easy and preferred access. Additional gameplay elements include the ability/necessity to fight from the back of your mount, Ruin, and the collection of the souls in the form of glowing orbs that fall to the ground as enemies are dispatched. The latter can be used to level up War with new items and abilities.

Varied Characters and Environments
Although players take on the imposing role or War, Darksiders alsocontains a wide variety of equally intriguing and sometimes frighteningcharacters. These include: an assortment of vengeful angels; demons, suchas "the Jailer" whose body is made up of the remains of countless cadavers;a bestiary of wicked and vile creatures created to bolster the armiesof hell on Earth; and Ruin, the trusty steed of War. Gameplay environmentsplayers will experience are equally varied, and include areas both undergroundand on the surface, that call to mind both familiar, if ruined modernurban environments, as well as ones seemingly pulled from the nightmarishscenes of the biblical apocalypse.

Key Features

Apocalyptic Power of War - Unleash the wrath of War, combining brutal attacks and supernatural abilities to decimate all who stand in your way.
Extreme Arsenal - Wield a devastating arsenal of angelic, demonic, and Earthly weapons, and blaze a trail of destruction atop Ruin, War's fiery phantom steed.

Xbox 360 Head Set Communicator Review

Xbox 360 Head Set CommunicatorIf you're playing on XBox Live, you really need a headset. Most games involve voice coordination between people on the same team, and sometimes even discussions with your opponents.

I'm not sure why my experience was so different than the previous reviews. Maybe they got an older version of the headset? It definitely seems to be the same unit - made by Microsoft, for the XBox 360, the basic model.

This headset is relatively inexpensive, and has a padded earphone and microphone. The earphone is adjustable, to have the headband part expand and contract. This lets it fit on larger and smaller heads. The microphone rotates, so that the unit can be worn on the left or right side. It only spins down to just under a 90 degree angle, though, so this forces you to wear the headset with the band right over the top of your head. At that spot, the microphone is pretty much right in front of my mouth (I prefer it a bit lower) and the opposite-side "bracer" part is digging into the skin just over my non-earphoned ear.

I don't know what it is with these headset creators - but at its smallest setting, the unit is still too large for several adults I know. That makes it even worse for teens and kids! That being said, I find this problem with a lot of headsets, so it's something you just have to deal with.

There's a relatively long cord, and it plugs right into the base of your controller. It doesn't interfere at all with wireless controllers. The base part has a mute button as well as a volume control.

I didn't have any problem at all hearing other players when I was online - their voices came through very clearly. Also, the unit fit very snugly into the base - I didn't have any problems with static or dropped signals. In fact for a while I was letting my boyfriend drive in PGR3 while I talked in the headphone/mic, and even with the cord stretched out between us two I could hear fine. Other players could hear me. I didn't notice any issues with lag, our conversations went back and forth rather quickly.

Raw Danger Review

Raw DangerI am about 3 hrs into this game so far and up to this point it's worth the money so far.I mean you can tell it's a budget game but it's not really that bad at all.

The graphics are pretty decent but the voice levels need a lot of work.A lot of the time you can barely hear the voices over the roar of the flood and such and there is no way to adjust the voice volume that I can see.

The object of the game...it's seriously flooding, the city is falling apart and shaking with quakes, and you need to get the heck out of dodge! lol

You start out as a waiter named Joshua in what looks like a banquet for some mayor I think. As you are "waiting", all heck breaks loose and you and the guests need to get out of the city and to safety. So the adventure begins as things continuously get worse and worse.

If you want something different and you enjoyed Disaster Report, then I recommend picking this one up for under $20.

NFL Head Coach 09 Review

NFL Head Coach 09Let me first say that this game does have some issues, but EA put out a patch that fixed some major problems (2 min. offense and injuries). Could the game have been better? Of course, but I find the game very fun and totally addicting. If you are a diehard football fan I can't see how you wouldn't like this game. If you feel the need to control the players every move then play Madden 09! (Common sense goes a long way in life) Just like real NFL coaches, you have to suffer through some dropped passes and fumbles that your over paid players put you through. The game is a little slow in reacting to your button inputs, but you get used to that. It's not a button sensitive game like Madden, so it doesn't matter. The longer you play the more you understand why certain things happen. Your head coach (I chose to create my own) and your staff all have skills that they either already have or that they need to learn over time. You earn "skill points" by winning games. You develop these skills over time and it truly affects everything on the field. As far as graphics go, I think it really depends on what view you are using during the actual game. You can change views easily with R2. The "cinematic" view looks very good, but I use "overhead" also to really see the x's and o's in action. I highly recommend actually playing each game instead of simming them. You learn more about your teams' strengths and weaknesses that way, and more importantly you can increase your teams' "play knowledge". This is a crucial part of the game. Each play is either "unlearned, learned or mastered". Your players' success has everything do do with their knowledge of the plays. My only real complaint about this game now is the fact that once you start a game you cannot save it until it's over. Lastly, I would suggest you increase the skill level slider (for both your team and the AI) all the way up on the running backs. The standard default for the running backs have them doing some really random and unskilled things.

Jak & DaxterI am a 40-something gamer and as an adult gamer time is limited.I usually have a million and one things all in competition for my precious free time. That is why I love Jak and Daxter. The game is very easy to learn, only took me about 5 minutes, and is straight forward in communicating the mission objectives. The best attribute in this game is the ability to save anywhere! There are times when I only have a hour or a half hour to play any games.A game that requires I play for a minimum of two hours before hitting a save point is a game I would tend to avoid. But Jak and Daxter and its "save anywhere" function is just what all adult gamers have been looking for.But be warned, this game is highly addictive. So, while you may sit down with the intention of playing for only a hour, several will go by as you become totally immersed in the great graphics and hilarous voice acting.I just can't wait to see what that little guy will say next, he cracks me up!I highly recommend this game for all ages, and especially for busy adult gamers who are looking for a quick game fix inbetween PTA meetings.

Ratchet & Clank Review

Ratchet & ClankI myself happen to be a casual gamer who from time to time will buy a game that looks good.I first rented R&C to see if it was worth a look and it turned out to be a really fun game.
Ratchet and Clank is essentially just another platformer, but it's a truly exceptional platformer.Ratchet is a fun character to use, he can whack enemies and various objects with his wrench or use a nice diverse amount of weapons that you obtain along the way.Gameplay for the most part ramps up from easy to difficult keeping that frustration in check, not to mention that you have infinite lives. The gameplay itself is fun with paths branching into different areas on each planet you explore.Environments and graphics are well rendered and creative and the varied enemies will ensure that you'll test out the best possibilities for each weapon.
All of this could describe several platformers but R&C one-ups them all by having some of the best voice-over work I've heard on a video game. From Ratchet's cocky attitude to Drek's villainous banter, it gives the proceedings a true cartoonish feel. The animation is nice and fluid with some truly hilarious cutscenes in between missions.Even the story, with its take on another villain trying to be ruler, has a different spin than normal.Drek's homeworld is dying so he's having other planets mined and destroyed to compensate.
Of course it would be remiss to omit the faults in the game. The one thing I really wish they could have fixed was the awkward switching of weapons.80% of the time it won't really be a problem. But then when you need to bring out the swingshot or metal detector, for example, you need to go to a subscreen and choose it.Also a problem is when you're under fire, you can't pause and switch weapons.Really annoying! There are some control issues too.Narrow platforms can be hard to traverse sometimes. It's especially noticable when you're using the magnetic boots.Although I am surprised the camera isn't a major problem.Just hit the L1 button and it lines up behind you. There's no problems with getting disoriented either since you can access the map to see where you are and where you need to go.
For the avid gamer, there's also hidden golden bolts to find in each level.I've only been able to find a few on my own (such is the curse of the casual gamer), but it gives anyone looking for more challenges even more to do.
I highly recommend Ratchet and Clank for anyone looking for a fun platformer. It may not be the most innovative game out there, but it's a highly polished and stylish one.

Divinity II: Ego Draconis Review

Divinity II: Ego DraconisWhy should you BUY Ego Draconis? If you're a fan of old-style RPGs with lots of quests (many with multiple solutions) and the absolute minimum amount of assistance when it comes to solving quests/puzzles, you'll have a ton of fun. Very early in the game, your character gains the ability to read minds, which provides insight into people's motivations and can alter the outcomes of various quests. And if you like games with a high level of difficulty, run out and buy Ego Draconis immediately! Even on the "Easy" difficulty level, you'll be dying quite a bit. Enemies do NOT level with you, and walking into a fight with enemies even a few levels above yours is guaranteed to end badly for you. The game also has a lot to offer people who enjoy thoroughly exploring every map/dungeon in their games. Ego Draconis offers many rewards to those who take the time to explore every nook and cranny.

Why should you RENT Ego Draconis? Well, how high is your tolerance for bugs and glitches? Because Ego Draconis has quite a few--Larian really should've spent a few more months polishing the game before they released it. I haven't encountered any that were game-breakingly bad, but even minor glitches can get annoying when there's enough of them. There are also a very limited number of areas in the game to travel between, and while the game offers different ways of resolving the quests you take on, there don't seem to be any significant consequences for the decisions you make. Which means that, at least for me, the game doesn't have a lot of replay value.

Why should you AVOID Ego Draconis? The main concept that the game is centered around is that your character can turn into a dragon, and I was pretty excited about that concept--it made the game a must-buy for me. But there are several things about it that I found very disappointing. For one thing, you won't get to turn into a dragon until you've put in a lot of time with the game--it took me just over ten hours to reach that point. Once you can transform, you'll find that your dragon is hemmed in by invisible walls and barriers that limit your freedom of movement. And the game also dictates which enemies you're allowed to attack while you're a dragon. I never experienced the sense of freedom and power that I expected to enjoy while playing as a dragon. To sum up: Ego Draconis is a decent game based on some interesting concepts which could've made it an amazing game...if they had been fully developed.

Gameplay
Divinity II: Ego Draconis like its predecessors, Divine Divinityand Beyond Divinity, is a single player RPG utilizing the standardsystem of experience point accumulation to level up characters to meetthe growing challenges faced. Except in cases where the storyline requiresspecific series of events and environments, the game features a seamlessgameworld, that for the most part players are free to explore. This alongwith a moral component to decision making, 20 possible quest solutionsand varied non-player character (NPC) reactions makes for gameplay pleasingto any RPG fan.

In addition, like Beyond Divinity, Divinity II featuresa classless character system, where it is possible for any created character, with the right distribution of experience points, to attain the itemsand/or abilities needed to triumph in virtually any situation faced. Thisis by design to add flexibility to gameplay. Players of Divinity IIalso experience flexibility in the game's mix of aerial and ground-basedcombat. This is rooted in shape-shifting ability that allows players, once the dragon ability is unlocked, and playing in areas physically permissibleto the dragon form, to switch between human and dragon forms at will.Beyond the obvious increase in power, playing as a dragon also allowsfor special skills and abilities not available to humans, as well as allowsyou to travel faster and longer distances than possible in your humanform. Be warned though, you are also much more visible to enemies. Anotherpivotal element of gameplay is the Battle Tower. Battle Towers are centralstructures to which you can teleport at all times - once a toweris yours, that is - using a mystical device called the Dragon Stone.More than that, your tower houses multiple rooms and terraces where differentattendants provide a variety of services.

Blue Dragon Review

Blue DragonBlue Dragon brings back a lot of good memories of classic RPGs ive played over the years. While not groundbreaking in any way, Blue Dragon takes all the eastern rpg conventions to near-perfection.

This may come off as a kids game when you see the childlike characters and cartoony animation style, but for every time you see some cute animals dancing you hear someone yell "that bastard!" or you encounter some ridiculously challenging boss. even the hardcore RPGer will find a challenge in some of these bosses.

The music is always fitting and usually quite beautiful. when you have the composer of FF I-V would you expect any less? i gotta say though, the boss battle theme feels a bit out of place. the total cheezemetal wouldnt be as bad without the vocals, and i know Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) is capable of much better. the voice work was all done exceptionally well though, with the main character Shu being voiced by the same actor as Izzy from the original cast of digimon. very recognizeable voice. i hadnt seen that show in at leased 5 years and i knew who it was right away. thats kind of pointless info, but i thought it was cool.

The main thing that drew me toward this game was the job system. If you've played Final Fantasy V you'll feel right at home with this job system. you select a class (sword master, black mage, ect) for each character. you can freely change class when not in battle, and as you grow in each class you learn the skills and abilities associated with that class. as your characters grow in level you can unlock new classes for them, although there are only 9 classes total, which i found a little disappointing; however, the job system is still my favorite aspect of the game. character growth and trying to balance the right mixes of classes for each is done better in this game than most others ive played. its simple yet very effective, like most aspects of this game.

Graphically, i think this game looks great. the world is full of unique and beautiful environments. from the characters to the environments and buildings, this is Akira Toriyama art all the way. this is one of the most cinematic games i have ever played. impressive pixar quality cutscenes and animations abound.

Blue Dragon plays out in the standard turn based style, however, there are no random encounters. you see your enemies walk around the areas as you explore. making contact with them will start the battle. when the battle starts you have a list of commands (attack, defend, spell, ect) and you choose one for each character. i feel a much stronger sense of strategy in this than any other game like this ive played. there is a list at the top of the screen showing you the next 4-10 turns. certain skills can be charged to increase power. the more you strengthen the attack, the more turns you have to wait for it to actualy happen. the charging is done with a mini game similar to the 3 click swing of golf games. little things like this add some extra depth to the combat.

the story itself doesnt shatter any conventions by any means. if you've played Japanese RPGs before you know the idea. evil being trying to overthrow the world/ragtag group of young heros set out to stop him and meet new friends along the way. its just that, like the gameplay, the characters and their underlying stories are done so well. i find myself actually caring what fate is in store for these characters. nearly everyone in this story has such a strong sense of charm and perseverance that you cant help but root for them.

The experience offered by Blue Dragon will make the seasoned RPG player remember exactly what got them into these games in the first place. For those who havent played one of the many Japanese RPGs over the last 20 years, this is one of the best places to start.

Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde for PlayStation 2 Review

Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde for PlayStation 2Drop what you are doing tonight and go buy this game. I bought it just because I like the title, ;) but I'm SOO glad I did. Seriously, it's loads of fun sending goblins to rampage and destroy the countryside - and the enemy in the process!
It's designed from the ground up for console, to need a small number of buttons, instead of stripped down from a PC game. And that, boys and girls, is why it works. The controls are simple not to baby you, but just because you won't wantan interface that gets in the way of Whuppin' Booty!
Instead of unit-based (as are most RTS, I think), this is more solidly squad-based (more like Warhammer, in that sense); you get up to 10 goblins of a given clan, and they always move around together, which makes it superfast to get them on the field. You can command up to 3 clans (so 3 squads on the field) per battle, and with literally 2 instant button taps, you can say "Stonecrushers, go over Here! Stormbringers, wait over Here!" or say "Stormbringers, you follow Stonecrushers!" It's easier than moving miniatures on a table!
You'll constantly replace the goblins as they die by summoning more. They don't "take time to train," they just pop out of the clan shrine and immediately run off to join their brothers in battle! Huzzah! Though you do have to watch out for that; if you don't want your new guys to leap into the ambush that killed their predecessors, be sure to reset the rally point back at camp!
The giant lumbering support Titans are brilliant to smash things with, and even more impressive when you zoom the camera down to goblin's-eye view. Oh, yeah! You can select a single goblin in a clan to be the "lead guy," which means your controller now moves Him about instead of your Commander cursor. All his buddies of course follow him, and your other 2 clans can be set to follow them... This way you can easily steer the Horde of 30 slavering goblins around the map, and zoom the camera down to their level and swivel it around to get a good look at the enemy's face when they see you coming! (all right, thier expressions don't change, but you can imagine they do) I don't know another RTS that gives you both the bird's eye view and the shoulder-level view.
I don't give it 5 stars just because there's room for improvement, but that should NOT stop you from enjoying this game. OK, enough of me. Go buy this game so they have money to make a sequel that includes online play! Go! Go now!

Raven Squad: Hidden Dagger Review

Raven Squad: Hidden DaggerWhen the only reason you want to pick up, rent, try or buy a game is the fact that it has a new `revolutionary feature' of its genre, it's a surefire sign that the game is most likely going to suck.

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger takes place several decades in the future, after a global financial incident has crippled many of the world's foreign, third-world countries. Because of this, guerilla factions are warring between one another, claiming territories of their own through terrorism and violence. This is what the game centers around--an event that, supposedly, should lead the player into an exciting first-person shooter.

To put it simply, I wasn't paying much attention to the story. The voice acting, the lack of a clearer, more defined visualization of what was happening (i.e, the loading screen,) and the cut scenes do nothing to enhance the story. The graphics, while not bad, look like something that could have come out of a final run of Xbox, Gamecube of Playstation 2 games. You should expect more when loading up a 360 games graphics-wise when they're so far ahead with their technology.

The combat, in a nutshell, varies between the levels and how you have to complete the mission. The first `tutorial' level takes place primarily in first-person mode, but soon switches over to the tactical, RTS-styled gameplay halfway through the level. First-person mode leaves nothing to be desired due to the fact that the game has so many flaws. Your team's A.I is so stupid that, at times, they won't even shoot enemies that are coming by them, nor will they attempt to take cover unless you yourself are near it. They follow you around like dogs and expect you to take care of them most of the time. The same problem happens in RTS mode, where, in normal, well-structured games, the units are able to defend themselves. Sadly, though, this doesn't work. Repeatedly clicking of enemies or cover is necessary to complete the missions without dying over and over.

The voice acting and animation is... subpar, to say the least. Mouth movements don't look like mouth movements, the voice acting is too load or sounds too much like voice acting in parts, and animation is clumsy. Enemies run/act the same, your team shifts around and acts the same way, and idle animations are repeated over and over again. Graphics, like I mentioned before, are bad. Even the weapons--which should be a quality part of a FPS--appear to be no more than wooden models or something you would find in a children's toystore.

PROS -

- The RTS, while not exciting, is better than the FPS mode.

Cons -

- Bad graphics and animations leave the player wanting more.

- A.I. Your teammates are about as smart as the average housedog and will do nothing but follow you around, only shooting when you shoot at something (or, in RTS, until you click on the enemy.) Enemy A.I is about as intelligent as you are, so it's basically a lose/win situation.

- Story. The story leaves nothing to be desired. The bad voice acting, cutscenes and lack of more engaging visuals on loading screens makes for a boring story experience.

- Combat. What should be the central and most entertaining post of this game falls short in the fact that killing enemies is extremely difficult. A shot to the head usually kills someone, right? Well, not in this game--at least, not always. Multiple shots are required to kill one enemy.

- Environment. Like the graphics, the environment could be better done, and could feature more interaction. Houses are not destructible, even when hit with a rocket launcher or a bomb; trees, plants and rocks do not react to your presence, and lighting does not reflect off your weapons or characters (at least, as far as I could see.)

I would've given this game more of a chance were it not for the unbearable amount of things wrong or underdone with it. The fact that I made it through three-and-a-half levels was amazing enough. A FPS game should be engaging in combat, which it isn't, and an RTS should feature more strategy than simply moving units from point A to point B and killing characters. Special commands are extremely difficult to use, combat is frustrating, and the A.I is unbearable.

I give this game a two out of five, if only because I managed to make it through the first three levels. Don't rent it, don't buy it, and definitely don't consider giving it to a friend--they probably won't be your friend anymore.

Winter Sports 2008: The Ultimate ChallengeI'm well aware that it takes time to master the reactions necessary to do well at a video game. But the difficulty of steering my athlete through the Olympic games was too frustrating for me to have any immediate fun. After your ski-jumper has crashed for the twentieth time, you just stop wanting to play. This problem could have been solved by having an easy mode for beginners, or more detailed instructions about how to control players. C.O.P. The Recruit Review

C.O.P. The RecruitThe main plot of this game is that there is a terrorist organization plotting an attack in the city and you are a criminal-turned-cop who is helping to thwart the terrorists plans.
I bought this game because I thought it looked cool, but then saw a review for it in Game Informer that totally trashed it (I think they gave it 4.5 out of 10 stars).Needless to say I wasn't expecting much. However, after playing it, I am wondering if GI played a different game. This game is very entertaining. The controls are hard to get used to at first (and this is why GI gave it such a low rating).Behind the wheel action is probably the most complicated, as if you get going too fast, the car will spin out on you if you turn too sharply and oncoming cars seem to materialize out of nowhere sometimes. However, I don't think it is any worse than Grand Theft Auto on the DS....I had the same kind of problem with Chinatown Wars.I don't think that GI played it enough to rate it fairly, because after practicing driving for a while, it got easier and more intuitive.Practice makes perfect.
Another control that is hard to get used to is the shooting. You are essentially using 3 different things at once: the stylus to turn around and aim, the directional buttons to go forward, backward, and side-to-side, and one of the L/R buttons to shoot. This is challenging to get used to and a little frustrating at first, but once you've played a while, it feels much more natural.
I admit it is disconcerting at first because the optional side missions seem impossible to beat.My advice is to do the main missions for a while (you can try the side missions to gauge what they consist of too, of course), and then later try some optional missions. And if you fail a mission or optional mission, no big deal. You don't lose anything, you simply go back to the point you were at before beginning the mission (and the same optional mission will pop back up on your screen as well, if you'd like to try it again).
Regular missions vary in difficulty, from things as easy as going to a certain location, to taking out all the bad guys in a casino or putting out fires on multiple vehicles in a certain amount of time. Most of the more difficult missions, I had to do more than once because they aren't easy, but they are not enragingly difficult either.I think it is a perfect level of difficulty, challenging, but not impossible after practice.
Optional side missions are not as varied. You will have a speeding car that you have to catch up with and slam into several times to disable it in a limited time(I thought this one was most difficult by far), or you will have a robbery in progress and you have to take out the robber and accomplices.
The only thing I did not like about this game was that the guns did not hold very many bullets, and each time you need to reload you have to find the nearest artillery store and do it there. That gets a little annoying, but once you have collected a few guns from different bad guys you've shot down, it's not as bad because you can just change guns if you run out of bullets. You'll still have to reload at the artillery store but you won't have to do it as often.
All in all, this is a great game.If you like GTA for DS, you will most likely enjoy this game.It plays a lot like GTA, except you are playing the opposite side of the law:the good guys!

Trivial PursuitThe game is exactly as expected, you can play the classic mode against friends with an option to pass one controller or use separate controllers. The new, faster multiplayer mode which makes you share a wheel and eliminates sections of the board after gaining pieces is a lot of fun as well and is very refreshing for quick games. You can play this mode in the fraction of hours it takes to finish a classic game.Since it's faster paced it will more easily get some friendly rivalries going with your friends. It also packs a single player mode which I can't yet comment on.

As shown on the back of the box, it does not have online multiplayer. The Live logo on the game is actually there to indicate that there is downloadable content. At release, they have a FREE movies pack DLC which adds over 100 questions to mix in with the standard questions or you can play them separately.

Now for some bad. I ran into quite a few American centric questions which, being Canadian, I had no clue how to answer.May not be a problem for you. Also somewhat related, there are lots of questions where you are shown dots on a map and need to answer a question.I really wish they'd have labeled what the dots were.In the original board game you'd get a list of places, not have to know where each state is or city is in a state in the US.Lastly, the Scene It big button IR controllers do not work with the game.Yeah it would be nice if it works but it's not that bad.Since you take turns you don't really need to answer questions that fast where you can't navigate with the analog stick, and the controls are pretty easy.

I would recommend this game if you have people over a lot that may not be into playing the more hardcore titles (Halo, Gears, etc.).It's great getting some non-gamer friends and family involved on the Xbox!

PalmOne P10914U Games Essentials Card Review

PalmOne P10914U Games Essentials CardOne of my favorite computer games is Shanghai: Second Dynasty. The version on this card is obviously derived form that version of Shanghai. It really looks beautiful with the green embossed tiger and dragon background. I miss the cool music and the fortune cookie, but you can't have everything. I would try putting together some nice Chinese music on mp3's to play in the background, if mp3's didn't use so much RAM. (As an aside, I appreciate that Activision and Landware don't call it Mah Jong. This is NOT Mah Jong! Stop calling this type of game Mah Jong!!! Mah Jong is completely different.) I tried SimCity and it seems to be fairly close to the full computer version, but I haven't really used it very much, yet. The Atum game is very addictive. It can also be very frustrating when it gives you a long string of the same atum. I have had a bit of difficulty using the backgammon game. It doesn't seem to work in a very intuitive way. The checkers is fine - if checkers is your thing - it works pretty much like I expected. I can't say how smart it is, since I'm not an expert. The chess is pretty basic. I bought a more specialized separate chess game that has a lot more features, but it cost half the price of this whole card. I'm not much for slot machines, poker or blackjack, so I won't comment on those. Ricochet is a very cool looking brick breaking game. It is very nicely done. The only thing I don't like is that the background is almost as dark colored as the bricks, so sometimes the bricks are hard to see and I'm using a Tungsten T that has a pretty nice screen. 9-Ball is a fairly decent pinball game. Pinball is the one type of game that just doesn't work well on a Palm. I've tried all the versions I can find and 9-ball is one of the best. But, that's not saying much. I guess the computing power required for really good pinball is still too much for Palm machines. Strangely, though, the Billiards game does work well. Surprisingly well! And it actually has good sound effects! Not bad! Okay. So, all together that's 12 games. Several really good ones, a couple so-so. I guess it's not such a bad deal. What I realy like is that it doesn't use up my precious RAM. Figuring in the value of a small SD card, the Palm Game Essentials Card is actually a pretty good deal!

Wired Kama for Wii Review

Wired Kama for WiiThis is a nice sized, solidly built Wii Nunchuk clone. It will rumble when used with the Nyko Wand.It works with the Wii MotionPlus (but will not rumble with MotionPlus-- Nyko is working on a fix...read their product FAQ).In any case, the official Wii Nunchuk doesn't rumble at all so you're not losing anything at present with the Kama not rumbling with MotionPlus games.

Great value!Get the Core Pak to get a combo wand/kama for even better value.

Karaoke Revolution: Presents American Idol Encore 2 w/Microphone Review

Karaoke Revolution: Presents American Idol Encore 2 w/MicrophoneThis game was purchased for my mother, which says it doesn't have a broad selection of her type of music. American Idol usually has lots of oldies, and older rock on the show whereas the game does not.

Additional songs are slightly expensive if you ask me @ $1.50/song on average. It would be nice if you could download huge packs of songs at a decent price instead of having to shop for them individually. Also, I don't think you can import songs from previous versions of the game, which is another negative point.

I wouldn't recommend this product for anyone over the age of 35.

Balloon Pop Review

Balloon PopI know UFO has been known to publish horrible budget games for the Wii (I'm looking at you, ANUBIS 2!). But don't let this stop you from checking out BALLOON POP! I was pleasantly surprised by this game. It's a variation on the old "match 3 of the same color" puzzle type game but it does things right. It's easy to learn and the game is simple. Wait until you get to higher levels where the action gets frantic! The Wii remote was made for this type of game as you cascade the pointer over all the different balloons. Two player versus mode is a welcome addition and adds value and longevity to the game. Colorful graphics and bouncy music round out the package. Worth your twenty bones!

Need for Speed: Nitro Review

Need for Speed: NitroGlad too see EA take the NFS series back into some arcade roots.Picked it up on sale and I gotta say I'm impressed.I'm in career mode and it seems pretty hefty with 6 locals and 8 missions per location for a total of around 50 challenges per career cup (Bronze Silver Gold).Missions consist of Circuit, Elimination, Time Attack, Speed Traps, and Drag.Includes co-op in career too.Over 30 cars to buy then a special edition of each car to unlock by completing challenges.I'm not sure if there is difficulty settings but its quite a challenge to get all the stars on some missions so far, there is auto assist for drifting that I have off.For controls you can use Motion, Wiimote + Nunchuck, Classic Controller, or even a Gamecube pad its good too have all 4 choices with 4p Multiplayer support. EA really went all out on car custumization with the ability to paint your own car free hand or with preset designs using the wiimote.Multiple parts are selectable and morphable for each part of your car(Hoods, rims, body kit, ect).So far its a great racer, may end up as one of my favorites of this gen up with Burnout Paradiseand Flatout: Ultimate Carnage.Art style is very unique with the track changing to your style as you go.Definatley refreshing after the bore frest that was NFS Shift
