I bought this game for my boys (ages 10, 8, 4) the day it was released without having read any reviews. I must say that I really lucked out because THIS GAME IS GREAT! Everyone in the family, and the neighborhood kids think it is great. It is also hilarious. From scene to scene you are changing which character you go through the story with, and each character [...]. has their own fighting style, special moves, etc. The bad guys (guards from the castle, wicked witches, cyclops, evil "pinocchios", and many more) are awesome. There is TONS of fresh dialog and comical interaction going on all of the time. It all had the same off beat Shrek humor and pop-culture references, but is definitely clean and appropriate for younger audiences as well as older ones.
The multiplayer catapult game, where you try to destroy the opponents castle is great. The minigames are also a blast. You can keep playing the game, even after you complete portions of it, by going back to complete more quests, and gather more coins in order to by outfits and other items for in the "Store". For example, you can buy Shrek a pirate costume or a suit of armor.
The Wii remote works very well for this game, although I would like to have seen some more crazy movement such as that required by Rayman Raving Rabbids (i.e. where you have to swing the cow over your head, or move the remotes real fast to run the race) -- I prefer to have the kids being more active. Nevertheless, there is movement required, and on top of that, you'll laugh at the dialog, and the crazy things going on in the game.
Shrek the 3rd also feels like Wii developers are really starting to get their arms around what this amazing console can do. The game play is FAST, the characters and their attacks are FAST, and the dialog is fresh throughout the entire game (no constant rehashing of the same phrases over and over again). The GRAPHICS are much better than most of the other Wii games we've purchased since last November (although we do not have Zelda, and I've heard it looks pretty good).
There are also many "movie" scenes within the game, and other parts of the story are told in a funny hand puppet play put on by our favorite, whiny wooden puppet himself. These really contribute to the humor and quality of the game, and are far more than distractions that some games make you sit through while waiting for your next level to load. We have fun just watching these little interactions.
Well, fellow Amazoners, that is about it. I hope this review has been helpful, and wish you a world of fun on your Wii with Shrek the 3rd.
