PalmOne Sega Classics Card Review

PalmOne Sega Classics CardI originally had a Tungsten-T, but would soon be upgrading to the LifeDrive. My fault for not doing enough google searching. Runs "well enough" on the Tungsten, but Sonic doesn't really refresh fast enough to get much value out of it. However, none of the games would launch on my new LifeDrive. The downloaded demo of Shining Force runs, but there is no "left" or "right" to be had on the directional pad. Only "up" and "down", which doesn't really help anyone.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Review

Virtua Fighter 4 EvolutionVirtua Fighter 4 evolution has done the near impossible, make one of the best fighting games of all time even better. There is still all the depth and enjoyment of the original, while adding two more characters and the next level of Kumite mode, Quest mode! This mode is a challenging ongoing game where you make your name in every arcade in Tokyo, eventually getting to the center Arena, to become the best Virtua Fight in Japan.Yes, it is a bit tacky, but that is not what is important.Customizable characters get even better as a new array of items is found. You can also get new fighting modes in the central arena, like balance and a mode where you take extra damage when you hit the floor. The fighting moves have always been, and still are, incredibly complex and deep. This is one of the only games I have seen that includes evasion, counterattacks, throw evades, and rolls that allow you to avoid ground attacks. It takes a while to master, but once you get it, it is a very deep and ingenious control system. The reviewer that gave two stars seems to be what most people are that dont like VF4: impatient. He claims that it is too easy in quest mode, but by the time you progress throughout Tokyo, you begin to fight some fighters that are modeled after real people that are among the best VF players in the world. They also lack the patience to go to practice sessions and explore the numerous moves available to them. The only regretable thing to VF4 Evolution is the lack of training your own A.I., which is included in the original. Most VF4 fans can compensate by just whipping out their old copies. If you are new to the series and you want to play the A.I. training version, then I suggest that you buy VF4 and VF4 Evolution, they are only $20 each and are both well worth it.Overall, I would say that VF4 Evolution is a wonderful game that makes other fighting games, with the exception of Soul Caliber 2, look just plain silly.VF4 Evolution, in my opinion could even top the prowess of SC2.Buy this, or at least rent it, you will not regret it.

EA Sports Madden 2005 Review

EA Sports Madden 2005Some great game calling features like the game you would expect, but not as good as one might expect for the price.

Pro:
-Amazing play calling
-Play your favorite team
-Add the weather factor
-Cool sound and voice overs... I was surprised and impressed

Con:
-Don't expect a manual with this classic adaptation. You'll need to download it to enjoy the advanced schemes and play calling.
-There's no CD, so if the card gets zapped (like mine did) you'll lose it forever.Make the back up before you play!
-Adverse weather options, like snow, are for the computer's benefit only.Don't expect a white playing field.

Bottom line: not recommended.I did not have it very long (it crashed and I lost everything because there was no CD).I was surprised that the big box it came in was essentially empty.Looks like the manufacturer decided to go cheap and leave out the CD and manual, two items I would have appreciated as I needed them.If they had these, would have ranked 4 of 5 stars.Lack of snow and other stuff cost them the last, 5th star.

Cocoto Fishing Master Review

Cocoto Fishing MasterThis is a pretty pathetic game.I think it was originally Japanese and someone put in English subtitles, so it is very "cutsie" and has no spoken dialogue. The controls are cumbersome and there is almost no plot to speak of.The ending is anticlimatic and the fishing just isn't that fun.My 6 year old son liked watching me play this game, so I beat it in about 10 hours total. He's trying to play it now and he's having some trouble with the controls, so I don't recommend it for children his age. However, it wasn't too bad for the price I paid and he's happy.

Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure Review

Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under PressureThis game has been in the minds of gaf heads for some time now, and when the release date snuck up on me, I headed to EB on my lunch break to pick up a copy. I should have read the reviews first. IGN basically bashed it and gave it a very average review, other site gave it acclaim. The game is pretty straight forward, you are Trane, a "toy" graf artist inspiring to be a legend. Your rival are other bombers and the cops (and a special anti-grafitti task force). Even underground subway workers try to tek a oiece out of you. This brings me to the first problem; the game is oddly enough very combat heavy, which isn't a problem (hey, punks jump up to get beat down...) but it is a gripe if the controls suck.Or maybe suck is too harsh a word, lets just say when Trane jumps, it like he' s floating. It's unstable to say the least, and in a game with alot of jumping, climbing, and fighting, thats a no siree. But as wonky as it is (and you will never forgive it), you will adapt or better yet, accept it and move on to the games stronger points, which is sleek presentation, style and graf influence.
Yes, I've bombed before, Im not going to be a dumbass and tell you where, but I was young, into art, and heavily influenced by the colors and style.I still marvel at really great pieces, and have yet to fully grasp the ever evolving 3d nature of the current graf trend. It really is great art when done properly, I love it.Marc Ecko loves it too, and it shows. Unlike GTA where tagging was a mini game, Getting up covers all aspects. One reviewer was pissed that you could put up your own piece, but to me, that was a stupid gripe. How interactive do you want games to be? it would have been nice, but it also would have meant alot of extensive peripheral crap that I dont have i.e. eyetoy and such. So just enjoy the fact that you can pick the styles and colors in which Trane bombs his moniker 'Trane' and be done with it.later, stenciled letters and numbers can allow you to be creative and write your initials and birthdate. see? think outside the box dammit!
The story is quaint, powered by the voice talents of Talib Kwali and others. Rosario Dawson adds her pipes to a very sexy female character who goes out with Tranes rival, Gabe.Charlie Murphy is White Mike, and there are curse words abound, SO THIS ONE IS NOT FOR KIDDIES IN BOTH SUBJECT MATTER AND LANGUAGE.Let them learn about graffitti the hard way, but visiting central booking....wait, that's not right either.
Bottom line....IF YOU DONT ENJOY BOMBING OR DONT CARE ABOUT GRAFITTI ART, INFLUENCE, OR SUB-CULTURE, THIS GAME WILL BORE YOU.Even if you do, it will aggrivate you with the wonkiness of the controls. it's not that the layout is bad, Trane just feels like he's not grounded to wats around him.He david Blane levitates all over the damn place! The interface, and music (Diddy did something right for a change) is awesome. They literally put you in Tranes Tims. you see and experience what he does, and when you bomb a 'heaven spot' it feels cool.some challenges get repetitive or tedious, such as tagging a van eight times....isn't once enough? others require you to take pictures of the tags of legends in order to upgrade you own style, which is sorts nice. I dont know how else to stress the fact that if you dont like grafitti, walk past this one.
The method of tagging a big piece is kinda cool, when you get a drip, it really bugs you. Doing it could have been more precise, but the fact that you are timed helps.I cant see alot of people messing up though, unless they have absolutely no coordination, its easy is what Im trying to say.Graphically, I've seen better and worse. The tags are sweet, Trane's are colorful and vary in style.you can use marker, stencil, and stickers for throw-ups; and latter move on the rollers and wheat paste.Characters are blocky, and the environment is not GTA go wherever the hell you want to. Trane has specific objectives and spots that he MUST bomb. Of course, you can write on most (not all) walls, but it's pointless to do so unless they give you rep points for it. Still, it is funny to see 'trane' written all over the evironment, too bad you cant tag moving cars!

Art of Fighting Anthology Review

Art of Fighting AnthologyArt of Fighting was never that good a series in the first place. It had poor strike resolution, EXTREMELY demanding joystick control (you need to be REALLY accurate with the fireball, dragon punch motions, etc., to get the specials out at all), almost no combos, and ungodly cheap CPU characters.

AoF had a small following but for the vast majority of fighting game fans it was always the game that you played if the local pizza shop or candy store didn't carry SF or MK.It was an innovator in the genre because it was the first to introduce a separate power bar for specials and a desperation move (though some will argue that those features were introduced in other games such as Crossed Swords, they were never in any head to head fighting game until this one), and the zooming display. But its animation is jerky, the zoom is very heavyhanded and tends to be disorienting, and the game mechanics were just not that good overall.

SNK didn't put out a really good fighter that was competitive with the SF and MK franchises until Samurai Shodown.Fatal Fury wasn't even that good until FFII.

Some of the fans out there will enjoy this because it's a fairly complete and faithful port, but honestly -- the game was never that good to begin with, and the benefits of buying this game on a new system will mostly be for nostalgia only.

Rapala Fishing Frenzy Review

Rapala Fishing FrenzyI bought this game and liked it immediately, but it is not without some small issues. It can be hard to learn how to drive the boat and to cast. Also, the reel attachment that came with the game broke after playing for a while. There are two screws that hold it together, and the plastic around them broke. Returned the game and bought a new one with no trouble. When you do learn how to cast and drive it is a great game and a lot of fun! The graphics are really wonderful and everyone gets caught up in the excitement when a fish is hooked. Overall, this is a great game, but a more sturdy rod and reel would be greatly beneficial.

Product Description:
Put your angling skills to the test in the best bass locations in North America. Rapala Fishing Frenzy puts you in the middle of heart-pounding fishing action as you compete in 20 events to fill your live well with only the biggest bass. But time is limited, so don't be late for the weigh-in. Test your skills on six of America's greatest fishing lakes, including Lake Wylie, Clear Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, Lake Amistad, Logan Martin Lake, and Lake Okeechobee. You'll fish for nine species of monster bass, such as large mouth, small mouth, spotted, striped and more. There are also 14 other trophy species, such as trout, salmon, northern pike, catfish and walleye. Casting the line is initiated by flicking the analog stick or -- for less patient players -- by inputting specific commands to attract fish. Once a fish starts biting, the fight begins. Following the on-screen visual cues, you must carefully balance reeling in the fish while keeping an eye on the line's tension so it doesn't break. Button combinations can also be used to weaken the fish's resolve, allowing for an easier catch. As you progress, additional rods, lures, and live bait become available to improve the odds of landing the "big one." Other play options include an Open Fishing mode and a Quick Challenge. The former has you fishing on your choice of lakes, while the latter involves racking up high scores in timed events.

Playstation 2 Guitar Hero Wireless Guitar Review

Playstation 2 Guitar Hero Wireless GuitarWell the guitar worked really well for the most part. Same size as the SG guitar that comes with the older games. Wireless is not very laggy and it has good range. Only complaint here is that the buttons seem to stick a bit more than the other guitar and they feel like they are made cheaper, but they worked good enough to use even on expert.

So it worked great for a month, and then one day it wouldn't connect to the receiver. I tried and tried and it would not connect. Tried everything I could think of including replacing batteries, resetting it, resetting the PS2, and even turning off my WiFi router and cordless phones. Nothing could make it connect, and in the rare case it did it would not hold the connection. I did not have a receipt so could not get a replacement on warranty so I decided to open it up and tinker with it a bit and here is where I found the problem. The wireless board is separate from the rest of the internal circuit board, and instead of being held on securely with a screw or such IT IS HELD ON SOLELY BY THE DATA PINS. I just barely pushed the wireless board with my finger and it easily bent back at a 45 degree angle from the other board. Most defiantly one of these pins had broken loose and caused the connection problems. This is very bad design. Since I have no soldering skills I had to throw it away.

If it wasn't for the bad design of the internals I would recommend this guitar. Until they fix the problems (maybe they have with the new style GH3 guitars) I would avoid these completely.

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum Review

NeoGeo Battle ColiseumSNK Playmore continues their line of solid, classic 2-D fighters for the PS2 with NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, which is by far the flashiest, and perhaps the most fun, of the bunch yet.NeoGeo Battle Coliseum features a horde of fighters from various SNK games: Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Last Blade, and even Metal Slug among others can be found here. What really makes NeoGeo Battle Coliseum so fun is that it is surprisingly easy to pick up and play.Even if you are a novice to the style of SNK's fighting games, you won't have too much of a problem getting into the gameplay and fighting mechanics. However, this also showcases the biggest flaw of the game as well: the fighting engine itself isn't very deep.Compared to SNK's own recently released King of Fighters XI, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum's fighting system can't even compare. That aside, Battle Coliseum is more about flashy, beat 'em up action than a deep and involving enginge, and the character sprites are big and well animated, as are the backgrounds. It should also be noted that Battle Coliseum suffers from a ridiculously hard, and cheap, end boss; which has been a signature of SNK's fighters for years now. That aside, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is a wonderful 2-D fighter that longtime fans of 2-D fighters and SNK's library will get much enojoyment out of for sure.

Swashbucklers Review

SwashbucklersI've read alot of reviews for this game that trash it.I am writing this review to say that this game does not deserve that. However what is does deserve is to make a check payable to Sid Meier. This game's only real fault is that it borrows so much material from Sid Meier's Pirates. If you're going to rip somone of then at least rip off the best. The 2 games are very comparable with each having their own strenths and weaknesses, but I digress as this is a review for Swashbucklers and I want to help you decide whether or not to purchase this game.

First off I am a little annoyed that in this day and age Atari would chose to have the characters talk in mumbles with text at the bottom of the screen. It sounds kinda like the Sims. This can grate on your nerves a little.Music is pretty boring too, but when you're in the middle of a naval battle you don't notice as much because cannon fire sounds just as you would expect it to.Awesome.Play these levels in surround sound!

When you board a ship combat starts out bland as there is one basic attack button when fighting multiple opponents, but as you level up you learn new attacks and defense options that you assign to the remaining buttons on your controller. In this way your character is quite customizable.Once you defeat all enemies on screen you then fence against the ship's captain much like in Sid Meier's Pirates. The only difference is that you have a high and low attact and now 2 special attacks.

You can also engage in prize fights at bars for cash. This mode, while fairly entertaining seems to be little more than a distraction from the actual gameplay. It controls much like the ship duels against the captain except you only lhave 1 attact.

My favorite part of the game is the naval combat.Fair warning though. The controls are pretty realistic so the ships move slow. The level of detail as you and your opponent blast one another's ships is awesome.

My recommendation is that you rent this one before deciding on a purchasing it.Some may find this game too slow for their tastes.Others may feel angered at the fact that it so blatantly draws material from another source. However, some may see this as a whole new experience in and of itself that warrants some extensive play time.

Athens 2004I recently bought Athens 2004 and thought it was fantastic, the gymnastics events looks very realistic, and the fact that you can use the dance mat makes the game even better. Halo 3 (Spanish Edition) Review

Halo 3An awesome game, no doubt about it, but it gets even better when you play through the campaign with Spanish dialogue. The Chief, or "Heffe," growls like an ultra-macho Antonio Bandaras, and Cortana's latin voice actor puts WAY more emotion into her lines than her english counterpart. So if you want Halo 3 to play out like a Telemundo Telenovela, pick this up.
Also, all of the menus and the multi-player experience are in english. If you're primarily looking to play some matchmaking, this is a great deal. The foreign language editions (also available in french) are usually half the price of the english edition.

Naruto Clash of Ninja 2 Review

Naruto Clash of Ninja 2Naruto Clash of Ninja 2 features the same voice actors as in the cartoon show dub. You can immerse yourself in the Naruto world in this fighting game.

The graphics are cel shaded and 3D, integrating well into the traditional Naruto style landscapes. The voices are the same as the cartoon series' dub - which you can either really appreciate, because you love the series in English - or which you can really be annoyed by, because the characters constantly mis-pronounce many simple Japanese names.

Where many cartoon fighting games are extremely easy, this one actually has some challenge to it. There are multiple characters, and you can have up to 4 people on the screen at any given time. The combos for a given character can be relatively tricky.

All of the characters are supposed to know the basic ninja techniques that they have learned in their training. However, for some reason, only certain characters can use certain basic moves, all depending on which happened to use that move in an episode. It would have been more realistic and interesting if everyone knew the basic moves but then differed on advanced moves.

The arenas you fight in are interesting - there are temples, outdoor areas, and other environments. The backgrounds are slightly animated, with crowds of cheering people going through the same one-second-long loop continuously. However, they aren't as advanced as most other fighting games out right now. You can't interact with your environment, you can't move from area to area or watch weather or movement of the world you're in. A lot of this is because of the GameCube's inherent limitations, but it does stand out when you've been playing other fighting games on other systems.

I found several of the comments made by certain characters to be incredibly repetitive. It was fine the first time, or the tenth time ... but after 100 times of hearing the exact same statement, it wears on you. It's also a little odd that the main menu shows Sakura (a female) looking at you, but all of the voice you hear is Naruto (a male).

Still, for Naruto fans who have a GameCube at home, this is a great way to immerse yourself in the Naruto world and enjoy it for hours on end. There are numerous characters, lots of battles to play and replay, and a variety of ways to upgrade while you learn all of the combos. As a small bonus, you get a collectable card as part of the set.

Well recommended for Naruto fans.

NBA Street Homecourt Review

NBA Street HomecourtI've never before played a video game that made me laugh out loud. But this one does that and more.Sure, there are more realistic games out there. But one doesn't always want realism when one is playing a game.Sometimes one wants to breakdance on the ball to the tune of Herbie Hancock's "Rock-It," then leap off Shaq's back, land standing on the rim, and throw down a MASSIVE dunk that sounds literally like a bomb while the name of one's hometown flashes on the screen.I know it's not original (old fans of NBA Jam will know what I mean), but the brilliant idea of combining real-world playgrounds and NBA stars with the physics of fantasy games makes this a game anyone can love.

I haven't felt inspired to write an Amazon review for years. And I'm 40 years old. This game is straight-up SICK.

Logitech Wii Speed Force Wireless Wheel Review

Logitech Wii Speed Force Wireless WheelThis is a quality wheel for the Wii. It's easy to setup, and I've used it with F1 2009 so far. One thing the product specs don't mention (or maybe I missed it) is that the gas and brake paddles behind the wheel are actually analog, which is fantastic! I expected them to be just on/off switches, but they have a good range of motion and are definitely analog, at least in F1 2009, and make car control that much better. I highly recommend this wheel, especially considering that you can buy a new one now for much less than the retail price. It doesn't work with all Wii driving games, but compatible ones I know about so far are F1 2009, Speed Zone, Dirt 2, Ferrari Challenge, and Need for Speed Undercover. I'll be trying all of them...

Rock Band: Country Track Pack Review

Rock Band: Country Track PackThe only downside I could find to this game is if you already have a band on the original game you can not continue on this. You must set up new groups. I enjoyed this more than the rock genre because I am a country music fan. We had a great time playing this.

The Bigs 2 Review

The Bigs 2This is a great game. Once you get the hang of it, it's hours of fun. Perfect balance of arcade and simulation. A great game to play with friends or online. The mini games add another element of fun. I think that this is a game that is what it is advertised to be.

Not a lot of change since the last game, but there wasn't to much more you can do to top the last one and what was lacking was added. I mean there's New & improved story mode, picking up at the end of the "Rookie Challenge" mode from The Bigs. Where you Create a player and progress your career from a Mexican league to the Majors and, eventually, the Hall of Fame. Along the way, compete in boss battles against MLB legends.

I also like the batters wheel house which show you the batters sweets spot.

This game is not too easy and not too hard if you play it long enough you appreciate it. Don't think the first time you pick it up you're going to be a pro... lol takes a few times on the sticks to get good, but once you got you got it.

And you'll soon learn that strategy is key to winning in the BIGS!!!

Viewlarger. The Wheelhouse
One of the new features of The Bigs 2 is the 'Wheelhouse,' an areain every batter's swing where their offensive threat is at its greatest.Color-coated and pulsating for both the batter and pitcher to see, ballsstruck well within this area are most likely to result in a hit, but thereare no guarantees. Although it is a dangerous place for pitchers to throw, the Wheelhouse is also a tempting spot for pitchers to challenge hitterssince not only do strikes result in the shrinking of a player's wheelhouse, but strikes and strikeouts centered there will earn the defensive team turbopoints that can be used elsewhere in the game.

Legendary Rated Players
The Bigs 2 features a special Legendary Rating system for playersas they develop. On defense a high rating means a player will be ableto get to balls other players can't, which will make them very valuableagainst high-powered offensive team. In addition, players with high statusare capable of spectacular plays, like jumping into the stands to roba batter of a home-run, pulling down come-backers off the bat of opponents, etc. When these plays are made players will gain access to play specificmini-games as a reward, that are designed to be fun and further hone theirskills in these specific areas. Along with the two mentioned above, playerscan also expect to see mini-games available to legendary rated playerssuch as handling line drives up the middle, diving plays in both the infieldand outfield and foul balls pulled from the hands of fans.
Legendary status is not limited to defensive fielding positions though. Pitchers can possess a legendary skill rating that allows them the possibility ofdomination on the mound. Batter's legendary ranking can also be utilized both by the power and skill they bring as they step up to the plate, as well as in some cases an ability to increase the potency of their teammates skill in the batters box. An example of this is an enlarged wheelhouse for the batter that follows a player with a high legendary ranking or even the entire lineup. In these cases the value and strategy of having legendary players available for insertion into the roster is obvious.

The Big Slam
Similar to functionality in the first game in the series that allowed players who had accumulated enough turbo points a strikeout or home run when theywanted/needed it, The Bigs 2 brings the 'Big Slam' to the field. In this case offensive players who have enough turbo points can opt to take on a series of pitches in an attempt at a simplified grand slam. The rub is that there are only four pitches involved one for each batter in the series. All it takes to get your man on base is to make contact. Once the bases are full a grand slam is automatic.

Key Features

Become a Legend Mode - New & improved story mode, picking up at the end of the "Rookie Challenge" mode from The Bigs. Create a player and progress your career from a Mexican league to the Majors and, eventually, the Hall of Fame. Along the way, compete in boss battles against MLB legends.
Season Mode - As requested by fans, enjoy a new Season Mode featuring full MLB schedules, stat tracking and roster management, as well as the ability to play as part of the team and general manager.
Improved Gameplay - Bigger and better arcade baseball action, featuring Legendary Moves, Batter's Wheelhouse & a more powerful Big Slam.

Multiplayer Support - 2 player local versus; 4 player local co-op; 2-4 player online versus; 5 player online co-op.
Game Modes
The Bigs 2 comes with a wide variety of modes, some familiar to players and others new. The first ofthese is the story based 'Become a Legend' mode. This career mode picks up where the 'Rookie Challenge' from the previous game left off and has players creating a player, who comes up through the Minor leagues, the Majors and eventually into hall of fame. Along the way he will be challenged in a variety of boss battles against major league greats from all eras. In addition The Bigs 2 features a 'Season Mode' where players play through an entire 162 game season, as players and general manager, improving your team and making trades along the way. The game also contains a new version of the 'Home Run Pinball' mode, set in modern Times Square, Times Square retro, Tokyo and Las Vegas; mini-games similar to those in the 'Become a Legend' mode; and the 'Pick-up Game' mode where players can play a fast game against a real or AI opponent.

Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage Review

Shaun White Snowboarding: World StageWe are a family of four and it's hard to find a fun game that is multi-player.This game is fantastic! My ten and twelve year old daughters loved it.It gives you the option of using the balance board or wii remote.Only one person can use the balance board since most of the time you are all four playing at the same time, but that was fine for us.The balance board is a little touchy and hard to use at first, but definitely gets easier with practice.Controlling the game with the wii remote is much easier to learn. The game has lots of customization built in for character clothing and boards. The entire family can play in career mode and all the gameplay you do in career mode counts towards your goals.Definitely one of the best group play games!

Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! Review

Scene It Bright Lights Big ScreenIf your a fan of the other SceneIt's for the 360, your best to avoid this low budget pile of crap. First off the entire format of the game has changed for the worse. There is no online play and no avatar support (it includes it's own characters to choose from). It has Big Button support but it seems sluggish and slow responding. It's obvious that it was not meant to use these controllers due to the fact that there is an Xbox 360 controller taking up half the screen during play to show you how to buzz in (yes seriously!!!). It reminded me of playing a low budget WII port or like going back and watching the never aired pilot of you favorite TV show. Save your money and hope Microsoft adds more downloadable content for SceneIt Box Office Smash.

Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 1 Review

Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 1It's about time that this collection comes to the US. This has the first 4 Fatal Fury games (the Real Bout Fatal Fury games are in Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 2 which is currently out only in Japan).

Like the Art of Fighting Anthology, these 4 games are 100% versions of the arcade games. However for the first Fatal Fury game, the issue of controls still comes up. FF 2 improves on this, with FF Special being the best game in the collection. FF 3 is the best looking game, but the new multi-line system is a little confusing at first. It's still a fun game needlesstosay

This collection will keep you playing as it's tough even on Easy mode. My main issue is the lack of a real 2 player vs mode like they have in the Art of Fighting series. 2 people can play, but the victor can't pick someone else for the next match.

Despite the shortfalls, this is a solid collection of old school fighting games. Hopefully Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 2 & the upcoming Japanese release of World Heroes Gorgeous will make it to North American soon.

Army of Two: The 40th Day Review

Army of Two: The 40th DayI must admit I was quite excited for The 40th Day. I enjoyed the previous installment in the series and had fairly high expectations for the second. So I sat down and put the game in and waited to be wowed. And then I waited. And waited. And waited some more. And then the credits rolled.

The 40th Day isn't an awful game but all the things that made the first game memorable like the co-op mechanisms, the tongue in cheek bromance, the ambiguous morality and the hard fighting brutality were completely underdeveloped here. The strength of a sequel over a new title is that a dev team can take all the popular aspects of a previous game and with that previous experience up the ante and redeliver a superior product based on those known strengths and weaknesses. Instead with the 40th Day you get exactly the same thing as before with an even thinner story (which I didn't thing possible) and a less engaging aesthetic. There is basically nothing here that makes me believe that a single lesson was learned from the previous title.

The controls are wonky but not intrusively bad. I did have an unexplainable bug where after I came back from turning off the game the Y-axis reset to un-inverted and I couldn't change it back. So if you're a freak of nature like me and play with an inverted Y-Axis be on your guard. The bug might make this game unplayable.

Also be warned: if you're looking for single player play time then don't put down your money on buying this game. I finished this game in less than six hours on Hard. There are a few unlockables but nothing to make it worth really playing through the campaign again. My recommendation would be to rent it and based off how much you enjoy the multi-player consider buying a copy then.

As far as the actual game play is concerned I was never once really engaged. The enemies have a very limited number of very jerky animations and their AI is unsatisfying. Like many poorly designed games that place an emphasis on the use of cover you'll often find yourself feeling like you're playing a game of wack-a-mole where you sit behind your cover and they sit behind theirs as you wait for them to lean out to ineffectually spray bullets at you. The enemies are not challenging and most of the episodes were you find yourself being challenged is when due to the design of the spawn points and the poor camera angles a half dozen opponents appear behind you. They're mostly carbon copies of each other, some with helmets and some with body armor but it's all the same deal. This is mixed up by having the occasional mini-boss which is decked out in heavy armor and has a special weapon like a Gatling gun or a grenade launcher. Between the combat cover mechanic and the cheesy pseudo-anime looking enemies I felt like I had traveled back in time fifteen years and was playing Time Crisis at the arcade again and not in a good way.

This is all interrupted by situations where you can take hostages and/or rescue civilians. While that sounds fun, and it is at first, it wears off about an hour into the game due to the fact that it's the same situation every time and you're never presented with a reason or a reward that makes you care. This brings me to the "moral choices" in the game. One of the great ideas in the game that had simply terrible execution the moral choices have almost no affect on the storyline or the game play. There are some items and weapon parts you can get one way as opposed to the other but they're not really a big deal and don't much alter the way you play the game or the manner in which it is or isn't enjoyed. You could be totally good or totally bad without significant alteration in the basic experience.

The second incredibly disappointing aspect of the game was the weapon modification. This is another idea that just never really seemed to get off the ground which is bizarre considering the attention and marketing it got as a component of the game. While you can change out barrels and add new sights or stocks, etc there is very little substantial difference in the weapon platforms. Once you buy one modification or the other it makes little difference what your "base" weapon is. Also the modifications themselves are limited and uninspired. With all the focus placed on attaining money in the game you'll find little reason to actually spend it as none of the mods have a real "fun" factor to them and their effect on your game play is minimal.

The multi-player is adequate but I don't see any shooter fan who owns a copy of Modern Warfare 2 spending enough time play The 40th Day to justify a purchase. You'll also notice that since you didn't pre-order a copy you don't yet have access to the Extraction feature of the game for a month. Note to EA: put a $10 mail in rebate or a poster or the such in your pre-orderers boxes. Leaving out an entire portion of your game for one of the most critical time periods for the sale of your product is incredibly stupid. Basically what EA has done is create the illusion of pre-orderers getting "extra material" by taking it away from everyone else. What a clever way to screw over your customers. Fire the guy that came up with that.

Bottomline: The game is a decent but not impressive 6 hours duck and shoot exercise. Unless you simply loved the multi-player portion of the first game I wouldn't recommend paying retail for this one. A rental isn't out of the question for a lazy weekend but with Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare 2, all vastly superior sequels, out or soon to be I'm not sure I'd argue you'll have more fun with this in your 360.

Pros:
*Good looking graphics, nice textures.
*Not too hard, not too easy.
*Curb stomping.

Subjective qualities:
*Simple combat mechanics.
*Check point save system.
*Not overly tactical, very shoot 'em up.

Cons:
*Terrible story.
*Very short.
*Undeveloped core concepts (weapon mods and moral choices).
*Painfully cliche aesthetics.
*Simple AI.
*Goofy Achievements.
*Little variation in play.
*Wonky Controls.
*You don't get the whole game you pay for on release (Extraction).

Set a few years after the events of the original Army of Two game,Army of Two: The 40th Day features the continuing adventures of millitarycontractors Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem. With the help of Alice Murray, their mission coordinator, they now run their own paramilitary business, known as TransWorld Operations (TWO). Working what seems to be a routinemission in Shanghai they find themselves surrounded by a force of competingprivate military contractors intent on running amok in the city. Will Riosand Salem survive? Will they be able to make a few bucks off a bad situation? All they have is each other to rely on.

Gameplay
As with the original Army of Two, and as the name of the seriesimplies, gameplay in Army of Two: The 40th Day revolves aroundco-op combat tactics necessary to survive specific and general combatsituations. Players can team up with an AI companion in single playermode or a human friend in two-player co-op. Co-op tactics are made awareto the player in what is known as the co-op playbook. Unlike the originalgame, which in some instances limited the use of some tactics to certainsituations, in The 40th Day, players have access to all tactics.Implementing these against opponents revolves around the game's "Aggro"system, tallied in the heads-up-display (HUD) and which measures the amountof attention a team member draws from opponents for certain tactics, leavingthe other team member in various states of freedom to launch coordinatedattacks as chosen. In addition to this change, players are also facedwith moral dilemmas in the game, including choices presented to one ofthe players on a team that the other must bear the consequences of, aswell as the decision as to deal with and/or defend civilian non-playercharacters (NPCs), who can be killed in the game.

College Hoops 2K7 Review

College Hoops 2K7The game is just Okay in my opinion. If there would have been more and better dunks I would have given it a higher score, other than that it is a great game, 2K is the best when it comes to sports games. If anyone is looking for a sports game I will probably always recommend 2K sports because they have never disappointed me and I have been playing 2K games ever since NBA 2K for the Dreamcast.

Jak 3 Review

Jak 3Note:This review is spoiler free with regards to the game's story

All good things must eventually come to an end, such as the star wars series, the lord of the rings trilogy, and the Jak and Daxter trilogy (not including the racing game and Daxter's own PSP game). After two excellent games, our favorite elfin friend and his furry sidekick come to the last entry in the Jak trilogy. The big question is:Is it a good ending?I'm pleased to say that overall, yes.

Jak 3 takes place an undetermined time after the conclusion of Jak 2.Haven city has become divided after relentless attacks by robots, metal heads and other nasties. The population blames Jak for these problems and he finds himself flown out to the wasteland, a harsh and unforgiving desert where nobody can survive without help.Abandoned by those he saved, Jak and his buddy Daxter set out on thier final adventure.

Like it's two predecessors, Jak 3 is a platforming game combined with a gun shooter. You get various jumps, kicks, punches and leaps, and you also get a wide array of firearms to take out your foes when your fancy Kung-Fu and karate aren't enough.Jak's moves remain largely unchanged from Jak 2 (which will now be called J2).He can still punch like a man, jump like a kangaroo, and leap like a bullfrog.

Gunplay remains pretty much the same as well. You get four guns (blaster, rifle, machine gun and peacemaker), but in a nice twist, each weapon gets various upgrades as the game goes on.The rifle for example, starts out in it's default setting.Hower, the next upgrade allows it to shoot richochet bullets while the third upgrade gives it a flying platform that shoots bullets in all directions. Each gun has three upgrades and playing with them is a blast. The peace maker for example, can fire a shot that paralyzes all enemies and makes them float around (whee!) while it's final upgrade...well, let's just say that you'll be shooting mini-nukes a lot.

The biggest change to Jak's game play comes in the form ofvehicles. While J2 had flying vehicles and zoomers, Jak 3 has cars (and not the nice, talking Pixar kind).Because half the game is set in the desert, Jak and Daxter get around on dune buggies. There are eight of them and each has various unique traits. Some are really, really fast, one can jump riddiculously high (wheee!) and some of them will spin out of control at the slightest twitch of the control stick (boo!).You'll be spending a lot of time driving the buggies and for the most part, it's enjoyable and fun, though some of them (such as the sand shark) can be a bit difficult to handle.

Another new feature of Jak 3 is the sheer size of it.J1 and J2 had two enormous areas to run around in.Here, you have not one, not two, but three, yes, three! gigantic areas to run around in.And like the previous games, there are no loading times, an astonishing feat considering how enormous both worlds (Spargus city, the wasteland and Haven city) are. You'll definatly see a lot of amazing sights during your trips throughout Jak 3's world (such as how Haven city has...ahem...changed since the last game).

Dark Jak powers return as well, but are now balanced by a new side to our hero...light Jak.If Dark Jak is the attacking force, Light Jak is the defensive force.Dark allows you to kill things really quickly, while Light allows you to heal, fly (this is so AWESOME!), surround yourself with an inpenetrable shield, and even slow down time to a crawl. Both powers can be activated at any time as long as you have light and dark eco in your meters. And in a very nice touch, you can stop being light or dark at a touch of a button to save your energy for when you really need it.While both light and dark do come into play at vital moments during gameplay, both are really just a little added bonus to spice up gameplay when you want to, as you can play throughout the game without needing to use either force (except for scripted moments where you need to).But then again, being able to heal yourself whenever you want is a very handy thing! *smile*

Like J2, Jak 3 has you going from place to place, talking to people and doing what they tell you to do.And when you finish with that, you head over to the next person and do what they want to do, etc. It's a linear system that makes it easy to tell where to go and what to do next and it sounds fairly restrictive, but it does have one big strength:You don't have to start the next mission until you want to.If you want, you can wander around the wasteland blowing up wanderers for twenty hours, go hunt down twelve precurser orbs and watch the sun go up and down three times, and then tackle the mission. This free roaming system allows you to do what you'd like to do if you don't feel like doing missions for a while.

One thing i'd like to address before we go any further is the difficulty level. If one takes a look at my review for J2, one can find a lot of anger and hatred directed towards Naughty dog for making J2 the most unnecessarily hardest game i've ever played (and it still is by the way, tied only with Spider man for PS2).I am very pleased that Naughty Dog towned down the difficulty a lot for Jak 3.No longer does each and every mission require twenty attempts before you pass it, and no longer will you be throwing the controller into the TV while screaming obscenities becuase that a**hole Errol won that fricken race again. Here, the difficulty seems just right. Not too hard, not too easy. Most missions require a few attempts before they are completed, and a few can be finished on one try. There are still a few that are quite difficult, and one or two that are grit-your-teeth inducing, but overall, nothing as infuriating as many moments from the previous entry in the series.Oh, and there are only a few "go through the ring" missions this time around.Thank goodness.

In addition to the free-roaming gameplay, there are also plenty of secrets to unlock in this quest. There are over 600 precurser orbs to find and collect in Jak 3, and by doing so you get to unlock various features such as unlimited dark and light Jak power, invincibility, extra vehicles, various weapon upgrades, etc. While some are hidden behind corners, many of these orbs are collected by doing various challenges that people throw your way, such as searching around a paticular area, going through rings (grumbles), following a little blue light and even stopping time. There are plenty of things to do to get those little shiny orbs, but the results are well worth it.

In addition, Jak 3 arguably has the best moments in the series in terms of "wow" factor.Fighting a gigantic sixty story tall monster with only a dune buggy is a moment that sends shivers down your spine.

Even with all these fine points, Jak 3 does stutter a little bit in what is arguably the most important part of the game...the story.J2 is most memorable to me for it's story. It had many twists and turns and you never really knew what to expect next. The story in Jak 3 is a good one and it does keep your interest in what is going to happen next...but ultimitly, it left me unsatisfied.

How so?The three biggest ones are charachters, the precursers and the ending.

And for those of you worrying that i'm going to tell you who the precursers are (which I won't) i'm going to keep this as spoiler free as I can.

First off, the charachters. We have Jak and Daxter of course, and those two are always fun to watch and care about. We have many returning charachters such as Torn, Sig, and Samos, and we have some new residents from Spargus city. The problem?Almost all of the returning charachters have zilch charachter development. It's assumed that you know them from the last game and because of that, Jak 3 takes no time to explain who they are or what they do.That may be okay, but pretty much none of the charachters are expanded at all.Torn is still gruff and tough (but not as much as last time), Ashelin is the firm leader, and Samos gives warnings on what may happen to the planet if things go badly.Keira, who was such a vital charachter in J1 and J2, has absoloutly nothing to do in the story aside from look pretty and important.Sig...well, he's just there because he's cool. The only returning charachter who kept me interested was Tess, who fufills the "dumb blonde" role. Her relationship with Daxter is sweet and lighthearted and kept my interest easily.Errol returns as well (though I won't say how), but he's gone from "insanely irritating" to "average irritating", a sad departure from his compellingly egotistic nature in J2.

Of the new charachters, only one, Damos, kept my interest due to his charachter.Tough, yet gentle and caring at the same time, he's easily the most compelling of Jak's new companions. The new villian, count Veger, isn't that compelling, though he does have some very powerful scenes (especially one near the ending).

One of the claims on the back of the game box is that we'll discover the shocking secret of who the precursers really are.As I said earlier, I won't reveal who the precursers are (someone did that and ruined the suprise for me), except that in my personal opinion, we should have never find out who the precursers were and leave them as a mystery.I personally felt that seeing who they really are sucked out all the suspense and mystery, esepcially since they have been talked about at length for two games now. It's like revealing the face of doctor claw. When you go back and experience your old memories, there is no more mystery or wonder anymore. In my personal opinion, these beings should have remained hidden forever.

However, the saddest part of the...Read more›
